 Isolation Stories:

Series 1 - Episode 1

Length 00:00 - 14:00

We get introduced by four characters and one of them which is Mel the protagonist in this series has her camera off whereas with the other three characters, their cameras are on. The location in which this whole series is set is at their house due to lockdown. Curtain locations all have some type of meaning throughout the series to what Mel is going through such as, in the living room, she is more relaxed with her legs on top of books on a table whilst talking to her parents on a web cam call. Whereas in her bedroom at night, she is very stressed and upset as well as agree as this also helps to set the mood by setting it at night. During daylight whilst the birds are singing at a sunny day, she in a happier mood and very positive with her self that she even starts singing for her future new born baby in a couple weeks time whilst recording herself. This overall differs from a traditional produced TV show is because, it is set just in the house rather than going out and about outside of the house.

1. What were the creative limitations faced by ITV by the imposition of Lockdown rules?

The creative limitations faced by ITV by the imposition of Lockdown rules had to restrict themselves from physical contact, limiting actors as it is set at home and multiple cameraman to operate the cameras. They could also only film it at home which restricts the availability of space and location.

2. What was the impact on technical crew of Lockdown restrictions?

The impact on technical crew of Lockdown restrictions had to get delivered sanitised filming equipment to the actors at home. They would then take the stuff out, clean it, then they would talk through the phone how to use it. They would also use zoom calls for certain scenes for other actors talking to each other during lockdown.

3. What creative solutions were found for each of the following production stages: WRITING - REHEARSALS - FILMING - EDITING

During production, zoom calls were used for the crew and the actors and once on, the filming begins. The team worked virtually to make it all happen. Lastly the editing process was done by getting footage that was sent to them and to make it into a rough cut so that the post production technicians would finish the final cut.

Compare (Watch an episode of two of the following):

The vicar of Dibley
     and
  Staged

Visuals:
Both Staged and The vicar of Dibley have similarities when it comes to visuals as they're all raw footage that is also set at their home without adding any special lighting arrangements or other necessary needs. Due to the lockdown that was going on, they weren't able to leave the house legally unless its essential.

Shot types:
Both used mostly mid shots throughout the whole call which was filmed only on their laptops. They would have used apps to call such as, zoom, teams, face-time and other sorts of ways to call.

Editing:
Both series are similar to one another as they both used a specific calling method on their laptops with each other and only cuts were used in between each call. The cuts only happen when the scenery changes to create a new perspective of the story. Overall most of the scenes were lengthy which can also help achieve that lockdown feel of being dragged throughout the series.

Narrative:
Both show a perspective of the peoples real lives and they're not actual characters. Both are also mostly scripted as well as they do also show some features by showing other family members in some scenes. Overall the characters still make it as real as possible.

Style:
Both show very basic styles and is also a laid back series as they both have very simple camera shots, very simple stories, simple acting and it is just a normal day to day life they live in and from the audiences perspective, we learn about their personal lives by each episode which also helps to give us a better understanding that the lockdown situation does also effect others.
